Grossmont College Tournament

Teams: Moorpark (2-4), Los Angeles Southwest (2-4), Desert (0-5), (5) San Diego (10-2), (15) Victor Valley (5-1), (8) Grossmont (6-2), Palomar (4-3), Santa Monica (2-7).
Matchups: The Grossmont College Tournament gets underway later today as eight Southern California teams will take part in the event for the next three days in El Cajon, California. Three ranked teams will be in action as first round action starts today.
In the first match up of the day, Moorpark (2-4) will face off against Los Angeles Southwest (2-4). The Raiders come into the game winning two straight games after losing their first four to start the season. Moorpark is led by Cole Micek who is leading the team in scoring averaging 19.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this season. Micek is the only Raider averaging in double figures this season. Justice De Corsi (9.2 points and 5.0 rebounds), and Ethan Hermann (8.0 points) have contributed for the Raiders this season as well. On the other side of the ball, Los Angeles Southwest (2-4) will look to pick up a win after suffering a big loss to Santa Monica in their last outing. D’Lano Beckles is averaging 14.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game this season. Deric Daniels (13.7 points and 4.3 assists), Isaiah Hawk (11.2 points and 10.5 rebounds), and Jose Fouler (9.0 points) have contributed this season for Los Angeles Southwest.
In the second game of the day, 5th ranked San Diego (10-2) will take on College of the Desert (0-5). The Roadrunners come into the game on a five game losing streak to start the season. Three of their five losses have come against ranked teams within our Signal The Light Basketball rankings. Andre Allen leads Desert in scoring as the freshman is averaging 12.4 points per game this season. Philippe Salawa (11.6 points and 6.2 rebounds), and Arion Stevenson (11.2 points and 5.4 rebounds) are two other players that are averaging in double figures for the Roadrunners. San Diego comes into the game on a three game winning streak and the Knights are the only team in the state with 10 victories. Sophomore guard Wonder Smith leads the Knights in scoring averaging 15.3 points and dishes out 3.6 assists per contest this season. Robert McCoy has been solid as the wing is averaging 15.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per contest. Robert Taylor (10.5 points, 5.8 rebounds), Ethan Esposito (9.8 points and 5.0 rebounds), Luis Salgado (8.1 points) and Darius Lee (7.3 points) have played well for the Knights this season. The winner of this contest will take on the winner of Los Angeles Southwest and Moorpark in semi final action on Saturday.
In the third game and the possible match up of the day, 8th ranked Grossmont (6-2) will host 15th ranked Victor Valley (5-1) in a battle of ranked teams in our Signal The Light Basketball Southern California rankings. The Griffins come into the contest on a three game winning streak and will look to advance over the Rams in first round action. Bryce Parsons has been solid this season for Grossmont as the sophomore is averaging 14.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest. David Wheeler has been great for the Griffins as the sophomore is averaging 13.9 points and 3.9 rebounds this season. Ronald Blain (11.9 points and 8.6 rebounds), and Josh Moran (10.6 points and 3.9 assists) have both played well for the sophomore heavy Griffins. As for Victor Valley, the Rams will have one of their biggest test of the young season. Victor Valley comes into the game winning five of their first six games. The Rams will look to pick up their first victory against a winning team this season. Zach Christian leads the Rams in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 15.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest. Tristan Angelo has been solid this season for the Rams as the sophomore is averaging 13.0 points and 4.5 assists. Michael Obi (11.8 points and 5.5 rebounds), and Nathan Clark (10.2 points and 3.3 rebounds) are two other players that are averaging in double figures this season for the Rams. This will be a solid match up on day one of the Grossmont Tournament.
In the final matchup of day one Palomar (4-3) will face off against Santa Monica (2-7) for a place in the semi finals. The Corsairs have struggled early this season as Santa Monica has lost seven of thier first nine games this season. Joe Robinson leads the Corsairs in scoring averaging 15.8 points per game and Jhamad Norwood is averaging 12.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per game through nine games. Michael Fry (8.9 points and 7.4 rebounds), and Robiyon Hughes (8.7 points) have contributed this season. Palomar comes into the tournament losing two of their last three games after spending some times in our Signal The Light Basketball rankings. Jackson Strong has been solid this year for the Comets as the sharp shooting guard is averaging 20.7 points and 7.0 rebounds per contest. Strong leads the state in three pointers made with 34 through 7 games and is shooting 44% from downtown. Matt Meyers (13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds), and Corday Fairley (9.1 points) have been solid for the Comets this season. The winner of this first round match up will face off against the Victor Valley and Grossmont winner in the semi finals tomorrow.
