Teams: (3) Diablo Valley (6-3), (11) Monterey (9-4), Solano (4-4), Foothill (7-5), Hartnell (6-3), Ohlone (6-5), Cerro Coso (1-4), West Valley (6-6).
Matchups: The West Valley Tournament begins today as eight Northern California teams will participate in the event in Saratoga. Two ranked teams from Norcal will be in action today in first round action.
In the first round, 3rd ranked Diablo Valley will face off against Monterey in a battle of ranked teams. 3rd ranked Diablo Valley comes into the game winning four of their last five games. Four Vikings are averaging in double figures and Diablo Valley is led by Ben Wood who is averaging 14.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game this season. Wood is shooting 49% from downtown and has shot the ball extremely well for Diablo Valley this season. Demarre Walker is averaging 11.7 points and 4.2 assists for the Vikings and has played solid at the guard position for Diablo Valley. Brandynn Manning (10.8 points) and Victor Mijas (10.7 points and 3.4 rebounds) are two other players to watch this weekend for Diablo Valley. Meanwhile, 11th ranked Monterey (9-4) comes into the match up on a four game winning streak as the Lobos picked up three straight wins in San Jose last weekend. DeShawnte Collins leads the Lobos in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 12.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game this season. Elijah Nesbit is averaging 10.7 points, and 4.6 assists in his second season for the 11th ranked Lobos. Marcus Wallace (9.8 points) and isaiah King-Halsey (8.2 points) are two other players that will look to contribute in the match up between two ranked teams in first round action.
In the second game of the tournament, Solano (4-4) will battle Foothill (7-5) in the first round in Saratoga. The Falcons come into the game on a two game losing streak, and will look to pick up the win over the Coast North conference team. Leon Williams leads Solano in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 15.3 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest. Williams is shooting 39% from downtown and has scored in double figures every game that he has played this season. Isaiah Duplechan is the other Falcon averaging in double figures in scoring as the freshman is averaging 12.1 points this season for Solano. Trevaughn Ross (9.9 points) will look to contribute in first round action for the Falcons in the match up later today. Foothill comes into the game winning three of their last four games and the Owls are coming off a championship loss to Contra Costa in the finals of their own tournament last weekend. Matt McAndrews has been solid this season for the Owls as the point guard is averaging 20.1 points and 3.7 assists this season for Foothill. McAndrews has scored over 20 points this season seven times and had a season high of 29 points last weekend against Feather River. Alex Gil-Fernandez is the other Owl averaging in double figures as the sophomore is averaging 17.2 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season. Gill has scored in double figures in every game this season and had a season high of 25 points against Victor Valley last weekend. Aaron Moore (7.5 points), DeAngelo Blackwell (7.6 points), Chris Russell (7.3 points), and Joe Pitocchi (7.3 points) will all look to contribute for the Owls in first round action. The winner of this match up will face off against the winner of the Diablo Valley and Monterey on Friday.
In the third game of the day, Hartnell (6-3) will battle Ohlone (6-5) in the first round. The Panthers come into the tournament with two straight losses after starting the season winning six of their first seven. Spencer Conrad leads Hartnell is scoring as the sophomore is averaging 17.0 points and 6.3 rebounds per game this season. Conrad scored a season high of 31 points against Los Medanos on December 5th and will look to have a solid game against Ohlone. Kishon Rogers (12.9 points), Jesse Hurtado (11.1 points) and Rene Hurtado (9.9 points) have played well for the Panthers this season. Ohlone comes into the game looking to find consistency. The Renegades went 2-2 last week at the Modesto Tournament and will look to play better this weekend. Richard Oryem leads the Renegades in scoring as the freshman is averaging 16.3 points per contest this season. Oryem has a season high of 30 points against Canada on November 11th earlier this season. Bryce Thompson (14.8 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 4.5 assists) has been solid for the Renegades as the guard has been a solid all around player for Ohlone through eleven games. Kai Winterling (11.8 points), Cameron Bradley (9.7 points) and Devonte Butler (9.0 points) will all look to contribute and pick up a first round victory over Hartnell later on today.
In the finale of the first round, Cerro Coso (1-4) will face off against tournament host West Valley (6-6). The Vikings come into the match up on a two game losing streak and will look to advance to the semi finals with a win over Cerro Coso. Three Vikings come into this weekends action averaging in double figures as Devante Johnson leads West Valley in scoring averaging 18.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Johnson had a season high of 31 points in his last game against Porterville last weekend and the freshman has had five other games where he scored 20 or more points in this season. Delvon Nisby (16.7 points and 5.8 rebounds) and Cristian Mejia (16.5 points and 3.4 rebounds) are two players that are averaging in double figures and will look to contribute against the Cerro Coso later tonight. The Coyotes come into the game winning their last outing against the California Lutheran JV team but Cerro Coso has failed to win against another junior college team this season. Cameron Redd leads the Coyotes in scoring as the freshman is averaging 19.5 points per game this season. Kainoa Matthews (15.6 points) is the other Coyote scoring in double figures as the sophomore has played well through five games. Brock Duffield (9.8 points) and Ray Gonzales (8.2 points) will look to contribute tonight against West Valley. The winner of this match up will face off against the winner of Hartnell and Ohlone in the semi finals on Friday.
