Seven Tournaments begin today as the first weekend of December starts off a busy weekend in California junior college basketball throughout the state. Four tournaments started yesterday and action continues today on a busy Friday and continues all weekend.
Antelope Valley Greg Anderson Memorial
In Lancaster, the Antelope Valley Greg Anderson Memorial Tournament begins today at 1pm as eight teams from southern California will participate in the three day event. Five ranked teams from the Signal The Light Basketball southern California rankings will take part in the event. In the opening game, 5th ranked Fullerton (4-2) will look to end their two game losing streak as the Hornets will take on 15th ranked Bakersfield (6-3). In the second game, top ranked and unbeaten San Bernardino (7-0) will look to win their eighth straight game to start the season as the Wolverines will take on winless Los Angeles Harbor (0-5) for a place in the semi finals. In the bottom half of the bracket, Mira Costa (3-5) and Ventura (6-4) will match up in first round action. Ventura is on a three game winning streak and will look to advance to the semi finals tomorrow as well. In the night cap, 14th ranked Rio Hondo (6-2) will look to pick up their fifth straight win against tournament host and 13th ranked Antelope Valley (3-4). The Marauders are looking to get back on track after starting the season at 1-4 but have looked better the last couple of weeks as they have won two straight games but will have their hands full in first round action. This will be a solid tournament and with five ranked teams participating this will be a tournament we should keep our eyes on.
Golden Gate Classic
In Northern California, seven northern California teams will take part in the three day Golden Gate Classic hosted by San Francisco City College. Four ranked teams from Northern California will highlight the tournament with action beginning at 2pm today. In the opener at 2pm, 15th ranked San Joaquin Delta (2-1) will look to get back on track as the Mustangs open up first round action against Contra Costa (1-5). The Comets will look to end their five game losing streak against Delta at 2pm. In the 4pm game, 8th ranked Diablo Valley (4-2) will look to get back on track as the Vikings will face a San Jose (2-3) team that has lost three straight games. In the 6pm game, 2nd ranked San Francisco (7-1) will look to get back on track as well after their loss at the Fresno Tournament with a first round game against 13th ranked Sierra (2-3) which has lost three straight games at the Fresno Tournament. In the night cap, College of the Sequoias (3-3) will look to win their third straight game with a game against Cypress (0-4). The Chargers have started with four straight losses and will travel from socal to try and pick up their first win against the Giants at 8pm tonight.
Mt. San Antonio Mountie Classic
In Walnut, two norcal teams, Middlebrook and five other socal teams will participate at the Mountie Classic the next three days beginning today at 1pm. Three ranked teams will take part as 10th ranked Cerritos (5-2) will battle against unranked Orange Coast (4-3) in first round action at 1pm. The Falcons will look to get back on track after losing 77-60 to San Bernardino at home last week in non conference action. At 3pm, 4th ranked Citrus (7-1) will look for their seventh straight win against 5th ranked Fresno (4-2). Fresno has won three straight games since starting the season 1-2 and picked up wins at their own tournament against Mt. San Antonio, Sierra and knocked off a solid San Francisco team two weeks ago. In the third game of the tournament at 5pm, unranked Merritt (0-2) will look to pick up their first win of the season against Imperial Valley (1-6) which has lost six games in a row since winning their opener. In the finale of the night, Mt. San Antonio (6-4) will look to win their third straight game as the Mounties will take on Middlebrook in first round action. The tournament will be three days long and should be a solid tournament this weekend.
In El Cajon, seven junior colleges and a prep school will highlight the Grossmont Tournament. San Diego will be the only ranked team taking part in the three day event going on this weekend with action beginning today at 2pm. In the opener today at 2pm Grossmont (3-4) will look to end their three game losing streak against Balboa Prep in first round action. In other action at 4pm, College of the Desert (0-4) will look to pick up their first win of the season as the Roadrunners will take on Los Angeles Southwest (3-5) in first round action. In the 6pm game, Palomar (3-3) will look to end their two game losing streak against Moorpark (2-4). The Raiders will look to end their two game losing streak against the Comets. The last game of the night, will feature 7th ranked San Diego (9-3) against Santa Monica (4-3). The Knights are on a four game winning streak and will look to advance to the semi finals with the win over the Corsairs.
Four teams will take part at the Cabrillo College Classic for the next two days. At 5pm tonight, De Anza (3-5) will look to end their four game winning streak against 12th ranked Lassen (6-4). The Cougars have won four straight games and are in the rankings for the first time this season. In the night cap, 4th ranked Butte (5-1) will look to win their fourth straight against tournament host and 6th ranked Cabrillo (5-2).
Redwoods Tregs Classic
Four teams will participate at the Redwoods Tregs Classic for the next two days. In the first game, Mendocino (1-4) will look to end their two game winning streak as the Eagles will take on Shasta (2-6). In the night cap, Southwestern Oregon will face tournament host Redwoods (3-5). Redwoods will look to win their third straight game against the out of state junior college.
In Sonora, three junior college teams and the Simpson JV will participate at the Columbia Tournament in the next two days. At 4pm today, West Hills (2-3) will look to win their third straight game as the Falcons will face unranked Modesto (4-4). The Pirates have lost two straight games since their 4-2 start. In the 6pm game, Columbia (1-4) will look to end their two game winning streak as the Claim Jumpers will take on the Simpson JV in day one action beginning at 6pm tonight.
