Another Saturday of Junior College basketball has come and gone, and their were no major surprises throughout the state. Merritt College improved to 7-1 and with a win today the Thunderbirds should step into the top ranked NorCal team in the Signal The Light Basketball rankings which come out Monday. Third ranked San Jose beat a solid Sierra team on Saturday night at the Diablo Valley Tournament to move to 6-1 on the season. In Southern California, East Los Angles continues to play solid basketball moving to 7-1 after holding off a tough Moorpark team. The Huskies will face a Cuesta team today that will be looking to move up in the rankings as well. Today will finish off the weekend filled with basketball and as November comes to an end, so does the first month of the Junior College basketball season.
Citrus Tournament – Glendora, CA
In the first game of the consolation bracket Citrus (2-3) kept Orange Coast winless 90-77 on Saturday at the Citrus Tournament. John Roach scored a team high 20 points and Justin Childress added 12 points and 5 assist. Deion Page had 20 points in the loss for Orange Coast (0-6). San Diego pulled away from El Camino Compton-Center in the second half for a 86-67 victory. Caleb Singleton had 22 points and Chris Burton added 16 points and 10 rebounds for San Diego in the win. James Boyd had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the loss for El Camino Compton-Center. Marquis Salmon had 14 points and 7 rebounds and four other Huskies scored in double figures as 5th ranked East Los Angeles (7-1) beat 14th ranked Moorpark 72-67 in the championship bracket. Joshua Brooks led Moorpark (6-3) with 20 points in the loss. Cuesta (6-1) beat Victor Valley in the semi final game 78-76. Rafael Casanova led the Cougars with 27 points, and Keshawn Leggins added 12 points. James Tonic and Deshawn Hayes each had 18 points in the loss for Victor Valley (4-4). In today’s match ups Citrus will meet San Diego in the consolation championship, followed by Moorpark and Victor Valley in the 3rd place game. In the championship East Los Angeles will be tested against a solid Cuesta team.
Palomar Tournament – San Marcos, CA
At the Palomar Tournament on Saturday, Los Angeles Harbor (3-1) beat San Diego Miramar 49-43 in a low scoring game on the consolation side of the tournament. Elliot Morris scored 18 points and Shane Smith added 12 in the win for Harbor. In the other consolation bracket game St. Katherine beat Los Angeles Southwest 93-84. In the semi finals, Saddleback (8-1) thrashed Los Angeles Trade Tech 95-63. Saddleback had six players score in double figures and led by 24 at the half. Dusty Baker led the Gauchos with 15 points in the win. Antonio Singleton led Trade Tech (2-4) with 19 points in the loss. Southwestern (6-2) beat host Palomar (4-2) in the other semi final battle 52-50. Danny Lomax hit the game winner with two seconds remaining to put Southwestern into the finals. Stephon Lott had 12 points and Shawn Lathan added 11 points for the Jaguars. In today’s action St. Katherine will meet Los Angeles Harbor in the consolation championship game, and in the 3rd place game, Los Angeles Trade Tech will face Palomar. In the championship game, Saddleback will face a solid Southwestern team.
Bakersfield Tournament – Bakersfield, CA
Los Angeles Pierce beat Barstow 81-72 in the first matchup of the day. Lorenzo Goines scored 15 points and Jordan Fuller added 14 and three other Pierce players scored in double figures in the victory. Javone Rabon scored 17 points in the loss for Barstow. In the second game, Porterville picked up its first victory of the season by blowing out Fullerton 69-41. Davy Baltus and Alex Simpson scored 11 points each and the Pirates held the Hornets to 25% from the field. Ryan Mcgee had 13 points in the loss for Fullerton. In the game of the night, 2nd ranked Merritt beat Bakersfield 71-62. Trevon King and Leo Smith scored 12 points for the Thunderbirds in the win. Deandre Dickson had 12 points and 14 rebounds, but was 4 of 16 from the field on the night. In today’s action, Los Angeles Pierce will face Merritt, Barstow takes on Fullerton, and Porterville will take on host school Bakersfield in the final day of action.
Diablo Valley Tournament – Pleasant Hill, CA
In the second day of the Diablo Valley tournament, West Hills (4-6) beat Contra Costa 70-66 in the consolation bracket. Kharyi washington led the Falcons with 27 points in the victory. In the second game of the consolation bracket, 8th ranked Feather River (6-2) dismantled Solano 94-76. Jarrell Tate scored 29 points and Anthony Gattrell added 21 points as the Golden Eagles advanced to the consolation championship. On the championship side of the bracket 3rd ranked San Jose City (6-1) beat Sierra 81-66. Chris Sterling led the Jaguars with 23 points and 4 rebounds and Devonne Nolan added 12 points in the win. In the last game of the evening, Diablo Valley (3-4) upended Las Positas 67-63 to advance to the championship game. In today’s action, West Hills will face Feather River in the consolation championship game. Sierra will meet Las Positas in the 3rd place game, and San Jose and Diablo Valley will battle for the championship game.
Cabrillo tournament – Aptos, CA
At the Cabrillo Tournament, Lassen held off Columbia 61-59. Marquell Hubbard led the Claimjumpers with 17 points in the loss. In the second game, Cabrillo beat Butte 74-55. In today’s action, Lassen will take on Cabrillo and Columbia will face Butte for the second time this season. Columbia beat Butte earlier this season at the Las Positas Tournament.
Santa Monica, CA – Mt. San Jacinto 110 Santa Monica 97
Sam Williams had 27 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assist and Tre Hunter added 19 points as Mt. San Jacinto (5-3) beat Santa Monica 110-97 Saturday night. Admassu Williams scored 27 and had 8 rebounds in the loss for Santa Monica (2-4).
Redwood City, CA – Canada 96 College of the Redwoods 78
Crisshawn Clark had 31 points and 7 rebounds and Rhondell Goodwin added 22 points and 10 rebounds as 9th ranked Canada (6-1) beat Redwoods 96-78 at home Saturday night.
