Matchups: The Santa Barbara City College Classic begins on Thursday as seven Southern California schools and one Northern California school will take part at the three day event. Three ranked teams within our Signal The Light Basketball rankings will take part at the Southern California tournament.
In the first match up of the tournament, Oxnard (0-5) will look to pick up their first win against Bakersfield (6-4) in first round action. The Condors have struggled this season as they are winless in five games. Oxnard has given up 90 plus points in all five games. Jakari McClain leads the Condors in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 30.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game this season. McClain has scored 30 points in four of five games this season and the sophomore is shooting 48% from downtown this season. Lonnie Hinchen is averaging 19.0 points and Al Stubbs is averaging in double figures as the freshman is averaging 15.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest for the Condors. Bakersfield comes into the tournament on a two game winning streak. Jamar Hammonds leads the Renegades in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 21.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per contest. Jaylunn English is averaging 16.2 points and 5.2 rebounds and Tucker Eenigenburg has been solid averaging 15.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the Renegades.
In game two of the tournament, 9th ranked San Diego Miramar (7-2) will match up against Los Angeles Valley (2-7) at 4pm on Thursday. The Jets come into the matchup as one of the highest scoring teams in the state. Blake Seits leads the Jets in scoring averaging 14.3 points. Deion Alston (13.0 points and 4.9 rebounds), and Dallas Haupt (11.8 points and 3.9 rebounds) are both averaging in double figures for the Jets this season. Takoda Browne (9.1 points), Ryan Michaels (8.5 points), Chris Jones (8.6 points), and Caleb Giordano (8.3 points) have all contributed for the high scoring Jets this season. On the other side of the ball, Los Angeles Valley come into the game losing four of the last five games. The Monarchs are led in scoring by Christian Morataya as the sophomore is averaging 15.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists this season. Dejwan Walker (14.5 points and 4.8 assists), and Christian Hodge (14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds) have been solid this season for the Monarrchs.
In the third game of the day, 8th ranked Grossmont (8-3) will face will look to get back on track against Desert (0-7) in first round action. The Griffins come into the tournament winning five of their last six games and Grossmont can flat out shoot the basketball. The Griffins are shooting 40% from the three point line and are led in scoring by Bryce Parsons who is averaging 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds this season. David Wheeler is averaging 13.3 points and 3.5 rebounds, and Ronald Blain is averaging 12.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game this season. Josh Moran is the last Griffin player averaging 10.1 points per contest as the sophomore heavy team will look to pick up a first round win over Desert. The Roadrunners will look to pick up their first win of the season after losing their first seven games. Andre Allen leads the Roadrunners in scoring averaging 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Arion Stevenson (11.1 points and 4.3 rebounds) and Phillipe Salawa (10.7 points) are two other standouts this season for the Roadrunners who will look to advance to the semi finals with a win over 8th ranked Grossmont.
In the final game of the first round, 15th ranked Columbia (4-3) will battle tournament host Santa Barbara (1-8) for a place in the semi finals on Friday. Columbia comes into the game on a two game winning streak. The ClaimJumpers are led by sophomore guard Marquell Hubbard who averages 22.1 points per game. Yosnier Cobas (13.7 points and 6.3 rebounds), Al Burge (13.0 points and 8.9 rebounds), Chris Childs (11.0 points and 5.8 rebounds) and Maurice Woods (10.1 points and 4.4 assists) are all averaging double figures for Columbia. Santa Barbara comes into the contest losing eight of their first nine games. The Vaqueros only win this season has come against Cypress last weekend. Dejon Jackson leads the Vaqueros in scoring averaging 14.3 points and 7.7 rebounds this season. Drayten Howell (12.0 points and 6.3 assists) and Aaron Mejia (11.7 points) are two other players averaging in double figures and will look to contribute in first round action against Columbia tomorrow.
