San Jose City College Classic
Teams: Merritt (2-4), (1) San Francisco (9-1), Monterey (6-4), North Idaho, Los Angeles Trade Tech (2-3), San Jose (1-5).
Matchups: Six teams will participate at the three day event in Northern California. Four Northern California teams, one Southern California team, and one national junior college will take part in the three day event in round robin action.
In day one action, Merritt (2-4) will take on top ranked San Francisco (9-1) at 2pm. The Thunderbirds come into the match up losing three of thier last four games and will look to pull off the upset against the top ranked team in Northern California. Isiah Davis leads Merritt in scoring averaging 14.3 points and 6.5 rebounds this season for the Thunderbirds. Deon Steward has also played well as the freshman is averaging 12.5 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. Karin Helalil (7.7 points), Obie Richard (7.5 points), and Jahn Chanesse (7.3 points) will look to contribute for Merritt. The Rams come into the match up on a five game winning streak and have won nine of their first ten to start the season. San Francisco is averaging 93.1 points per game and have one of the deepest teams in the state. Terrell Brown is averaging 16.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists for the Rams. Eddy Ionescu (12.0 points and 5.1 rebounds), and Eddie Stansberry (11.3 points and 4.4 rebounds) are two other Rams averaging in double figures. Curtis Witt (9.7 points), Lewis Hayes (9.7 points and 6.3 rebounds), Michael Steadman (9.1 points and 6.0 rebounds), and Dexter Hood (8.9 points and 5.7 rebounds) have all contributed this season for the top ranked Rams this season.
In the second matchup of day one Monterey (6-4) will face off against North Idaho College. The Lobos are coming off a third place finish at thier own tournament. Deshawnte Collins leads the Lobos in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 12.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists this season. Elijah Nesbit (10.9 points and 4.7 assists) is averaging in double figures and has been solid at the point guard position for the Lobos. Marcus Wallace (9.9 points), Isaiah King-Halsey (9.1 points) have contributed this season for Monterey.
In the last matchup of the day, Los Angeles Trade Tech (2-3) will face tournament host San Jose (1-5). The Beavers have started the season off winning two of thier first five games. Maurice West and Lawrence Carter lead the Beavers in scoring as both players are averaging 10.3 points per game this season. Tyler Jelks is averaging 10.0 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest and is the only other Trade Tech player averaging in double figures. The Jaguars come into the game on a five game losing streak. Jonell Burton leads San Jose in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 14.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game this season. Kameron Vales is the other Jaguar averaging in double figures averaging 11.0 points this season. John Cezner is another player that has contributed this season as the sophomore is averaging 9.0 points this season.
