Mustangs and Giants meet in sweet 16

4th seeded San Joaquin Delta (23-6) will look to make a trip to Ventura as the Mustangs will host 5th seeded College of the Sequoias (21-8) on Saturday evening. It will be the second time this season the teams have met as Delta used a big second half to beat Sequoias 78-71 on December 2nd at the San Francisco Tournament. Jimmy Beltz scored 22 points and Cameron Pieters added 21 points in the meeting earlier this season. The Mustangs advanced to the round of 16 as San Joaquin Delta cruised past Butte 79-56 in the 2nd round on Saturday evening. Five different Mustangs scored in double figures led by Spencer Montiero as the sophomore had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the win. Jalen Valverde added 18 points and three other players scored in double figures as Delta picked up their 23rd win on the season over the Golden Valley Conference champions. Meanwhile, Sequoias comes into the contest after picking up a come from behind 94-76 win over Los Medanos. The Giants gave up 54 points in the first half and trailed by 15 at one point before going into the locker room 14 points down. Keshawn Gibbs had 19 points and 6 rebounds and Mike Johnson added 18 points for the Giants in the come from behind win.

San Joaquin Delta (23-6): The Big 8 champions come into the game with one of the best records since January 1st as the Mustangs are 14-1 in 2019. San Joaquin Delta won the conference championship losing two games in conference and the Mustangs had won 13 straight games before falling to Sacramento on the last game of the regular season. Four Mustangs average in double figures as Spencer Montiero leads Delta in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 17.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per contest. Montiero has played very well all season long and has been a standout player in the state. Cameron Pieters is another player that has played well as the big man is averaging 15.2 points and 8.2 rebounds per contest. Jalen Valverde (11.1 points and 6.9 assists), Jimmy Beltz (10.3 points) and Travis August (9.6 points) are three other players that will look to contribute against the Giants for the second time this season. Delta averages 77.6 points per game while the Mustangs give up 71.3 points per contest this season. The Mustangs shoot 47% from the floor (11th in the state), rarely turn over the basketball as they averaged 12.3 (10th in the state). The Mustangs are 22nd in the state in rebounding margin (5.8). It will be a solid match up between the two teams with a trip to Ventura on the line.

Sequoias (21-8): The Giants come into the contest winners of seven straight games as Sequoias finished in 2nd place in the Central Valley Conference. Sequoias has played solid basketball this season and the Giants are one game away from reaching the Elite 8. Three Giants average in double figures as Keshawn Gibbs leads Sequoias in scoring as the sophomore guard averages 16.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest this season. The sophomore guard gets to the line six times a game and shoots 79% from the line this season. Cal Baptist signee Tristan Forsyth is second on the team in scoring as the Australian is averaging 12.4 points and 7.3 rebounds this season for the Giants. Mike Johnson is a three point threat for the Giants as the sophomore wing has averaged 10.2 points and 3.9 rebounds in his second season. TJ Givance (9.6 points and 7.4 rebounds) is another player that will look to contribute for the Giants against Delta. Sequoias averaged 73.8 points per game and the Giants give up 63.3 points per game this season. Sequoias will look to control the tempo and control the glass as the Giants are 7th in the state in rebounding margin per game (12.2), and the Giants get to the line as Sequoias shoots 23 free throws per contest. At the defensive end the Giants give up 63 per game which is 4th best in the state and hold opponents to shooting 42% from the floor. It will be the second meeting between the two teams with a trip to the Elite 8 on the line.
