Matchups: Eight Southern California teams will take part at the Los Angeles Southwest Intensity Classic lasting for three days starting on Thursday.
In first round action at the tournament, Santa Ana (5-4) will face Los Angeles Valley (2-7) at 1pm on Thursday. The Dons come into the tournament with at 5-4 and are on a two game losing streak after suffering two straight losses at the West Los Angeles Tournament. Santa Ana is led by Cameron High as the sophomore is averaging 19.8 points per game and is shooting 40% from the three-point line. Xaiver Gunter is one of the top rebounders in the state and the sophomore is averaging 14.2 points and 13.4 rebounds per contest this season. Kenandre Broussard (11.2 points and 4.1 rebounds), and D’Caran Anderson (9.9 points) are two other players that will look to contribute this week for the Dons in first round action. Los Angeles Valley comes into the first round game losing 7 of their first nine games this season. The Monarchs are led in scoring by Christian Morataya who is averaging 15.5 points per game. Dejwan Walker (14.5 point, 4.6 rebounds, and 4.8 assists) and Christian Hodge (14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds) are the other two players averaging in double figures for Los Angeles Valley this season.
In the second match up of the day, Rio Hondo (1-8) will battle Oxnard (0-5) for a place in the semi finals at 3pm on Thursday. The Roadrunners come into the matchup on a four game losing streak and have lost eight of nine to start off the season. Kenyatta Louder has been outstanding for Rio Hondo as the sophomore is averaging 24.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per game this season. Jesus Hernandez (16.1 points) and Anthony Rios (11.4 points and 4.9 rebounds) have played well for Rio Hondo this season. Oxnard comes into the game winless this season as the Condors have lost their first five games of the young season. Jakari McClain leads the state in scoring averaging 30.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per contest this season. Lonnie Hinchen (19.0 points and 12.0 rebounds) and Al Stubbs (15.4 points and 3.4 rebounds) are both averaging in double figures for the Condors through five games this season. The Condors will need to get some stops as Oxnard has not held any team they have faced this season under 90 points.
In the 5pm match up on Thursday, Orange Coast (5-5) will face off against Hancock (6-4). The Pirates come into the match up on a three game winning streak and will look to advance to the semi finals with a win over Hancock. Orange Coast is led by Joshua Davis as the front court player is averaging 16.0 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this season. Sophomores Llyod Wright (15.8 points and 4.0 rebounds) and Kupaa Harrison (14.1 points and 8.2 rebounds) have played well for the Pirates this season. Hancock comes into the first round match up after suffering a home loss to Cerritos. Sophomore Shane Carney leads the Bulldogs in scoring as the sophomore point guard is averaging 17.0 points and 5.4 assists per contest. Glenn Jordan (10.5 points and 5.0 assists) and Spirit Ricks (9.8 points and 5.8 rebounds) have played well for Allan Hancock. The Bulldogs will look to advance to the semi finals as the winner of this matchup will face off against the winner of the Oxnard and Rio Hondo game on Friday.
In the final match up in the first round, Santa Barbara (1-8) will take on tournament host Los Angeles Southwest (3-6) for a place in the semi finals. The Vaqueros come into the game losing eight of their first nine games this season. Santa Barbara has struggled early in the season and will look to get back on track against tournament host Los Angeles Southwest. Dejon Jackson leads the team in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 14.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game this season. Drayten Howell (12.0 points and 6.3 assists), and Aaron Mejia (11.7 points) are two other Santa Barbara players that are averaging in double figures this season. As for Los Angeles Southwest, the Cougars come into the game on a two game losing streak. D’Lano Beckles leads Los Angeles Southwest in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 16.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per contest this season. Deric Daniels (11.7 pointsand 4.3 assists), and Isaiah Hawk (10.7 points and 8.7 rebounds) are two other players that are averaging in double figures and the Cougars will look to advance to the semi finals with a win over Santa Barbara. The winner of this first round match up will face off against Santa Ana and Los Angeles Valley on Friday.
