Tar Tars sting Hornets in Fullerton

Friday marked  the last day of action for 2016, in men’s junior college basketball in California. Five tournaments come to a close last night and champions were named across the state. In non conference action 2nd ranked Compton went into Fullerton and crushed the Hornets 89-68 in a battle of two teams ranked in the top 5 in Southern California. In NorCal Foothill upended Cabrillo in a battle between ranked teams.

Chabot Tournament

In the consolation final at the Chabot Tournament, Leondre Lintz had 23 points and Jordan Roberson added 14 points as 14th ranked Cosumnes River (9-6) won the consolation final with a 61-49 victory over Sierra (5-9). Anthony Spencer had 15 points and Rashard Thornhill added 11 points in the loss for the Wolverines. In the third place game, D’Mauria Jones had 23 points and Antoine Warren added 21 points as 10th ranked Antelope Valley (9-6) crushed Tournament host Chabot 100-63. Elliot Harris had 15 points in the loss for Chabot (3-11). In the championship game, Rodney Pope went off for 31 points as 5th ranked Diablo Valley (12-3) won thier seventh straight game with a 84-80 win over Wayne County CC.

San Diego Mesa Tournament

In the consolation final at the San Diego Mesa Tournament, Jordan Rohan had 13 points and Chez Lister added 11 points as Cypress (8-7) picked up a 52-38 win over San Diego Mesa (3-11). Armstrong Ojunkwu had 10 points and 2 rebounds in the loss for San Diego Mesa. In the third place game, Cuyamaca (6-10) picked up third place by picking up a 86-69 win over Santa Ana (5-11). In the final, Darius Scott had 18 points and Troy Arce added 14 points as West Hills (8-4) continues to improve with a 73-70 win over 7th ranked East Los Angeles (9-4) in overtime.

Siskiyous Tournament

In the final day at the Siskiyous Tournament, Umpqua handed 7th ranked Butte (11-6) their third straight loss 82-74. Josiah Wood had 21 points and Darae Elliott added 16 points in the loss for the Roadrunners. In other action up north, Justin Johnson scored 20 points and Jacob Bigler added 13 points as Lane (8-4) cruised past Siskiyous 96-74. Daylon Blakely had 25 points and Johny Lopez added 12 points in the loss for Siskiyous (4-12).

Imperial Valley Tournament

At the final day of the Imperial Valley Tournament,  Shaquille Russell had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Phil Salawa added 17 points as Desert (3-11) won their second straight game with a 93-91 win over Pasadena (5-10). In other action, 15th ranked San Diego Miramar (12-4) stayed hot and won their fifth straight game with a 90-44 win of CETYS. In the other game on the schedule, Joel Anderson had 19 points, 11 assist and 6 rebounds as Los Angeles Harbor (6-10) picked up a 88-80 win over Imperial Valley (3-7).

Allan Hancock Tournament

In the consolation final of the Allan Hancock Tournament, D’Lano Beckles had 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assist and Willie Barnes added 17 points and 12 rebounds as Los Angeles Southwest (9-8) picked up a 71-69 win over San Jose (4-10). Jonah Underwood had 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 blocks and Jonell Burton added 20 points for the Jaguars. In the third place game, Brandon White had 16 points and 9 rebounds, and Malik Johnson added 10 points as Los Angeles Pierce (5-8) cruised past Cuesta 71-53. Karem Ozel had 21 points and Noah Saunders added 12 points and 4 rebounds in the loss for the Cougars. In the championship game, Nolan Willett had 14 points and 7 assist and Mark Fabricius added 13 points and 7 rebounds as Allan Hancock (8-9) edged Palomar 66-62 to win the title. Keegan Cummins had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Jackson Strong added 11 points in the loss for Palomar (7-7).

Non Conference

Fullerton, CA – (2) Compton 89 (4) Fullerton 68

Jermiah Curtis had 23 points and Anthony Fitzpatrick added 17 points as 2nd ranked Compton (13-3) went on the road and cruised 4th ranked Fullerton 89-68 on Friday evening. Ian Fox had 22 points and Kenny Barnes added 18 points and 9 rebounds in the loss for Fullerton (11-5).

Visalia, CA – (11) Ohlone 74 Sequoias 57

Blake McGlenchy had 16 points and 5 rebounds and Bryce Thompson added 14 points as 11th ranked Ohlone (12-4) cruised past Sequoias 74-57 in non conference action. Bobby Kazar had 14 points and 7 rebounds and Kentrey Bynum added 11 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assist in the loss for Sequoias (6-8).

Glendale, CA – (1) Saddleback 70 Glendale 54

T.J Shorts had 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assist and Jake Hawes made five three pointers and had 15 points as top ranked Saddleback (14-2) won their ninth straight game with a 70-54 win over Glendale (8-6). Serigne Athj had 13 points and Jack Karapetyan added 10 points and 8 rebounds in the loss.

Monterey, CA – (3) Las Positas 75 Monterey 70

3rd ranked Las Positas (13-2) won their sixth straight game with a 75-70 victory on the road against Monterey (4-10). Marcus Wallace had 17 points and Deshawnte Collins added 11 points and 9 rebounds in the loss for the Lobos.

Valley Village, CA – Irvine Valley 89 Los Angeles Valley 85

Lance Coleman had 32 points as Irvine Valley (9-6) picked up a 89-85 road win over Los Angeles Valley (4-9).

Aptos, CA – (12) Foothill 68 (13) Cabrillo 64

Alex Gil-Fernandez had 18 points and Vito Coppola added 14 points as 12th ranked Foothill (10-5) edged 13th ranked Cabrillo (8-6) on the road 68-64 Friday evening. Tynan Velasquez had 19 points and Brett Reed added 13 points in the loss for the Seahawks.

Saratoga, CA – Skyline 81 West Valley 53

Sonora, CA – San Joaquin Delta 74 Columbia 64

Eli Baidoo had 19 points and Darnell Harris added 15 points as San Joaquin Delta (7-6) picked up a 74-64 road win over Columbia (5-6) on Friday night.

Mesa, AZ – Salt Lake CC 89 (9) San Bernardino 72 

Bay Valley Conference 

Ukiah, CA – (9) Marin 90 Mendocino 60

In Bay Valley Conference action 9th ranked Marin (7-3, 2-0) went on the road and picked up a 90-60 win over Mendocino to stay unbeaten in conference. Herm Brown had 22 points and 6 rebounds in the loss for Mendocino (1-10, 0-2).
