Four tournaments around the state started off on Friday as two ranked teams lost in the first round of tournaments in day one. Signal The Light Basketball’s 7th ranked Southern California team San Diego City College were upended by Victor Valley 77-75 at the Citrus Tournament. In Northern California, 9th ranked Feather River went down to tournament host Diablo Valley 77-65. Below you can find a breakdown of each tournament.
Palomar Tournament – San Marcos, CA
In game one of the Palomar Tournament, Los Angeles Trade Tech (2-3) overcame a 7 point half time deficit and beat San Diego Miramar 79-77 in first round action. Antonio Singleton exploded for 32 points on 12 of 14 shooting from the field, and Charles Watts added 14 points for the Beaevrs in the win. In the second game, 4th ranked Saddleback (7-1) knocked off undefeated Los Angeles Harbor 68-50. In other first round action, Shawn Lathan scored 20 points, and Stephon Lott added 16 points as 10th ranked Southwestern (5-2) beat Los Angeles Southwest 84-67. In the last game of the day, host school Palomar (4-1) won its third consecutive game over St. Katherine 85-58. Jeremy Franklin led the Comets with 16 points and 8 rebounds, and Ryan Schaefer added 12 for Palomar. In todays action beginning at 1pm, San Diego Miramar (4-3) will face Los Angeles Harbor (2-1), followed by Los Angeles Southwest against St. Katherine. In the winners bracket, 4th ranked Saddleback will battle against Los Angeles Trade Tech (2-3), and tournament host Palomar (4-1) will face off against 10th ranked Southwestern (5-2).
Citrus Tournament – Glendora, CA
14th ranked Moorpark (6-2) overcame a two point halftime deficit and beat host school Citrus 80-77 in first round action. Larry Bush scored 17 points, had 7 rebounds, and 7 assist, and Reggie Dixon added 16 points and 6 rebounds to lead the Raiders. John Roach scored 19 points for Citrus (1-3) in the loss. 5th ranked East Los Angeles (6-1) toppled winless Orange Coast 94-75. Marquis Salmon had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Te’Shon Burton added 14 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assist in the win for the Huskies. Deandre Page scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds in the loss for Orange Coast (0-5). Kimani Lane exploded for 32 points and Stephen Evans added 13 as Victor Valley (4-3) upended 7th ranked San Diego City 77-75. Marcus Brumsey scored 18 points for San Diego (4-3) in the loss. 11th ranked Cuesta continues to roll, as the Cougars beat El Camino-Compton Center 87-55. Tayler Thompson had 26 points and 8 rebounds, and Rafael Casnova added 15 for Cuesta (5-1). James Boyd had 10 points and 10 rebounds in the loss for El Camino-Compton Center (1-1). Looking at today’s action, Citrus College will face Orange Coast at 1pm, San Diego will battle El Camino-Compton Center at 3pm. In the winners bracket, 14th ranked Moorpark will take on 5th ranked East Los Angeles, and Victor Valley will face 11th ranked Cuesta.
Diablo Valley Tournament – Pleasant Hill, CA
Josue Salaam scored 15 points and Chris Sterling added 14 points and 9 rebounds as 3rd ranked San Jose City College (5-1) beat Contra Costa 81-62. In other first round action, Sierra College (3-3) moved back to .500 with a win over West Hills 76-50. Las Positas beat Solano 82-67, and Diablo Valley (2-4) beat 9th ranked Feather River 77-65. Jarrell Tate had 23 points in the loss for Feather River (5-2). In today’s action Contra Costa will face West Hills, and Solano will take on Feather River in the losers bracket. In the winners bracket, San Jose will take on Sierra and Las Positas will take on tournament host Diablo Valley at 8pm.
Renegade Thanksgiving Classic – Bakersfield, CA
Deandre Dickson continued to stay hot in his freshman campaign as Dickson scored 24 points and had 11 rebounds to lead 15th ranked Bakersfield (4-1) over Barstow 74-68. In the second game of the tournament Los Angeles Pierce (4-2) beat Porterville 66-63 in overtime. Adam Armstead had 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 steals in the loss for Porterville (0-5). In the last game of the day, 2nd ranked Merritt (6-1) beat Fullerton 76-66. Jovantae Carlton scored 14 points and had 6 rebounds, and Denzel Bellot added 8 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assist for Merritt in the win. In today’s action Los Angeles Pierce will take on Barstow, Fullerton College (1-5) will take on Porterville College, and 15th ranked Bakersfield will face 2nd ranked Merritt.
In other action today, the Cabrillo tournament will begin. 4th ranked Lassen (9-1) will look to be the first team in the state to win 10 games as they will face off against 13th ranked Columbia (4-1). In the second game, tournament host Cabrillo (2-4) will take on Butte (4-1) at 2:30pm.
College of the Redwoods (3-3) will travel to 8th ranked Canada (5-1). Santa Monica (2-3) will host Mt. San Jacinto (4-3) at 3pm.
