Teams: Barstow (4-7), Cuyamaca (0-7), Glendale (2-5), (14) Irvine Valley (7-3), Rio Hondo (1-6), Cypress (1-6), Moorpark (3-6), Los Angeles Harbor (6-4)

Matchups: The Don Johnson Classic will start on Thursday as Cypress College will host the three day event. Eight teams from Southern California will take part in the tournament as one ranked team in our Signal The Light Basketball rankings will play at the Southern California tournament.

In the first match up of the day, Barstow (4-7) will face off against Cuyamaca (0-7) in a battle of teams with losing records. Barstow is coming off a good showing at the West Los Angeles Tournament as the Vikings lost in the championship game against West Los Angeles but picked up two victories last weekend against Santa Ana and Compton. Barstow has five players averaging in double figures led by Will Pierce. The sophomore is averaging 17.8 points and 3.3 rebounds this season for the Vikings. Ron Neezy is averaging 13.2 points and 4.9 rebounds, and Denzel Lipson is another key contributor for the Vikings as the freshman is averaging 13.1 points per contest this season. Paul Vilela (11.5 points and 3.4 assists) and Borja Soriano March (10.7 points and 8.3 rebounds) have both contributed this season for the Vikings. On the other side of the court, Cuyamaca will look to pick up their first win this season. It has been a rough start for the Coyotes as Cuyamaca has had trouble scoring the basketball this season as they have scored over 60 points one time this season. Saiyeed Mershon leads the team in scoring as the freshman is averaging 11.6 points and 6.1 rebounds per game this season. Abe Ali is another player contributing as the freshman is averaging 10.1 points and 4.4 rebounds in his first season.

In the second game of the tournament, Glendale (2-5) will face off against 14th ranked Irvine Valley (7-3). Glendale comes into the game on a four game losing streak and will look to upset the 14th ranked Lasers in first round action. The Vaqueros are led by Serigne Athj, as the sophomore wing is averaging 16.6 points and 4.6 rebounds this season for Glendale. Athj is shooting 47% from the floor and has a season high of 25 points against Los Angeles Valley. Chris Daniels is averaging 13.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and Dominic Gully is averaging 12.4 points and is shooting 40% from downtown this season. Jordan Matthews (10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds), and Richard Hollinger Jr (8.0 points) will look to contribute against Irvine Valley. The Lasers come into the game winning three of their last four games and are ranked 14th in our Signal The Light Basketball Southern California rankings. Jake Linksy has been solid for the Lasers as the freshman is averaging 14.3 points and 10.7 rebounds and has five double doubles this season. Cameron Griffin is averaging 12.1 points and 4.9 rebounds and Daniel Hernandez is averaging 12.1 points and 3.1 assists have played well for Irvine Valley this season. Parker Sims will look to contribute as the sophomore is averaging 8.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season.

In the third game of the day, Rio Hondo (1-6) will take on tournament host Cypress (1-6) in a battle of teams that have one win on the season. The Roadrunners come into this game on a two game losing streak and will look to pick up their second win on the season with a victory over Cypress. Rio Hondo will look to play better defense as the Roadrunners have given up 100 plus points in their last three outings and given up over 80 points five times this season. Kenyatta Louder has been spectacular this season for Rio Hondo as the sophomore is averaging 23.4 points and 7.4 rebounds this season for the Roadrunners. Louder has scored 20 or more points in six of seven games and has a season high of 31 points against Mira Costa this season. Jesus Hernandez is averaging 16.3 points and Anthony Rios is averaging 10.0 points and 5.0 rebounds and those two are the other two players averaging in double figures for Rio Hondo this season. As for Cypress, the Chargers will look to end their four game losing streak and a first round victory. The Chargers have scored over 60 points twice this season and will look to pick up their offensive woes. Brennon Palmer is leading the Chargers in scoring averaging 13.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game and Mike Magee is averaging 12.7 points and 5.4 rebounds this season. Randall Walker (9.2 points) and Hayden Moore (9.1 points) are contributing as well for the Chargers who come into the contest looking for a first round victory.

In the final match up of the first round Moorpark (3-6) will face off against Los Angeles Harbor (6-4). The Raiders come into the first round match up losing two of their last three games. Moorpark has one player averaging in double figures this season as sophomore Cole Micek is averaging 16.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.0 assists this season. Micek has a season high of 25 points this season against Glendale and has scored in double figures in eight of nine games this season. Garrett Bilby (9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds) and Justice De Corsi (8.6 points and 4.5 rebounds) are two other players that have contributed this season for the Raiders. Meanwhile, Los Angeles Harbor is on a two game winning streak and won four of their last five games. The Seahawks big three have played very well of late as three players are averaging in double figures this season for Los Angeles Harbor. Joel Anderson is leading the team in scoring as the sophomore standout is averaging 20.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.9 assists this season. Anderson is shooting 37% from behind the three point line as well for the Seahawks. Quincy Pinkard is averaging 19.2 points and 4.2 rebounds and Henry Johnson is averaging 17.3 points as both freshmen are playing solid for the Seahawks this season. Chris Jackson (9.9 points) has contributed for Los Angeles Harbor this season.
