Teams: Cypress (5-7), (2) East Los Angeles (9-3) , Antelope Valley (8-6), San Diego Mesa (3-10), (4) San Diego Miramar (9-2), Victor Valley (8-4) , Cerro Coso (2-6), Cuyamaca (0-11).
Matchups: The Cuyamaca Tournament will get underway tomorrow as seven Southern California teams and one northern California team will participate in the event. Two ranked teams inside of our Southern California top five will play at the event.
In first round action, Cypress (5-7) will face 2nd ranked East Los Angeles (9-3) in the first game of the day. The Chargers come into the game winning four of their last five games after starting the season losing six of their first seven games. Cypress has been playing better of late and the Chargers will look to get out of the first round with a victory over East Los Angeles. Cypress is led by Mike Magee who is averaging 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest. The freshman has scored in double figures in his last seven games and had a season high of 21 points against Glendale on December 9th. Brennan Palmer (13.3 points and 4.8 rebounds) and Hayden Moore (10.4 points and 3.8 rebounds) are two other players averaging in double figures for Cypress this season. East Los Angeles comes into the match up winning three of their last four games but the Huskies have not played a game since December 9th. Roderick Williams leads the Huskies in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 16.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per contest. Jacob Tyron (12.4 points and 4.7 rebounds), and sharp shooting Frank Bertz (13.0 points and 2.8 rebounds) are both in double figures for the Huskies. Bertz is shooting 49% from downtown and has played well for the Huskies. Solomon Hunt (9.8 points and 6.9 rebounds) has played well for East Los Angeles going into first round action.
In the second game of the day, Antelope Valley (8-6) will take on San Diego Mesa (3-10) in first round action. The Marauders have played better of late as Antelope Valley has won four of their last five games and won third place at the Compton Tournament last week. D’Mauria Jones is putting up solid numbers and the sophomore guard is averaging 22.8 points and 5.4 rebounds this season. Osi Nwachukwu (13.7 points and 5.9 rebounds), and Greg Floyd Jr (11.3 points and 4.4 rebounds) are two other Marauders averaging in double figures this season and both players will look to have a solid game against San Diego Mesa. The Olympians come into the game on a eight game losing streak and will look to pick up a win against Antelope Valley. San Diego Mesa picked up their last win on November 10th against Bakersfield. The Olympians are led in scoring by Morrie Neeley who is averaging 15.7 points this season. Neeley has scored in double figures in all 12 games that he has played this season. Armstrong Ojunkwu is another standout for the Olympians as the sophomore is averaging 14.9 points and 11.2 rebounds per game this season. Ojunkwu has been a force down low and is one of the best big men across the state. Joseph Davis (13.0 points and 3.4 rebounds) has played well for San Diego Mesa this season. The winner of this match up will face the winner of Cypress and East Los Angeles on Friday.
In other action on day one, 4th ranked San Diego Miramar (9-2) will take on Victor Valley (8-4) in the matchup of the first round. The Jets come into the game in the top five for the first time this season and are on a three game winning streak. Miramar is led by Deion Alston who is averaging 12.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest this season. Alston is one of four Jets that are averaging in double figures this season for the 4th ranked team in our Southern California Signal The Light Basketball rankings. Dallas Haupt (12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds), and Blake Seits (11.9 points) are the two other Jets in double figures this season. Takoda Browne (9.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 4.3 assists), Caleb Giordano (9.3 points) and Chris Jones (9.6 points and 4.1 assists) are three other players that will look to contribute in first round action against Victor Valley. The Rams come into the game on a two game losing streak after starting the season off 8-2. Four Victor Valley players are averaging in double figures led by Zach Christian. The sophomore big man is averaging 15.0 points and 9.2 rebounds this season for the Rams. Michael Obi is another standout for the Rams as the sophomore is averaging 12.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest for Victor Valley. Tristan Angelo (11.1 points and 4.3 assists) and Nathan Clark (10.3 points and 3.3 rebounds) are two other players averaging in double figures for the Rams as they will look to knock off the 4th ranked team in our rankings.
In the final match up of the day, Cerro Coso (2-6) will face off against tournament host and winless Cuyamaca (0-11). Cerro Coso comes into the match up winning their last game against Imperial Valley. Cameron Redd leads the Coyotes in scoring as the freshman is averaging 20.3 points and 13.0 rebounds per contest. Redd has posted six double doubles this season and has been a solid factor for Cerro Coso this season. Kanioa Matthews is averaging in double figures for Cerro Coso as the sophomore is averaging 15.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game this season. Brock Duffield (9.1 points) and Abriam Dickson (7.7 points) will look to contribute against Cuyamaca in first round action. Tournament host Cuyamaca will look to pick up their first win of the season and advance to the semi finals with a win. The Coyotes have lost eleven straight games to start the season and are having trouble scoring the basketball this season. Saiyeed Mershon is the only Cuyamaca player averaging in double figures as the freshman is averaging 10.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest. Abe Ali is averaging 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds and has provided Cuyamaca with some scoring. The winner of this match up will face off against the Victor Valley and Miramar winner on Friday in the semi finals.
