Matchups: The Clete Adelman Classic begins tomorrow as eight Southern California teams will take part in the three day event. Four ranked teams will be in action in Oceanside beginning at 12pm.
In the first match up of the day, 8th ranked San Diego Miramar (11-3) will face off against Barstow (7-8) in first round action. The Jets come into the match up on a two game winning streak and will look to pick up a first round victory over Barstow. Deion Alston leads the Jets in scoring as the sophomore is averaging 12.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. Dallas Haupt (12.3 points and 3.8 rebounds), and Blake Seits (11.9 points) are two players averaging in double figures for Miramar. Takoda Browne (9.7 points), Chris Jones (9.6 points), and Caleb Giordano (9.3 points) will look to contribute for the Jets. Barstow comes into the match up on a two game winning streak. The Vikings are led Will Pierce who is averaging 18.9 points and 3.9 rebounds per contest. The sophomore has scored in double figures in his last ten games and scored over 20 eight times this season. Denzel Lipson (14.7 points and 3.9 rebounds), Ron Neezy (14.1 points and 5.4 rebounds), Borja Soriano March (11.6 points and 8.1 rebounds), and Paul Vilela (10.7 points) are all averaging in double figures for the Vikings.
In the second match up of the day, top ranked San Diego (16-2) will face off against Los Angeles Pierce (3-10). The Brahmas come into the game on a five game losing streak and will have their hands full against our top ranked team in Southern California. Three Los Angeles Pierce players come into the game averaging double figures led by Jordan Newt. The sophomore guard is averaging 18.9 points and 4.4 rebounds this season. Chance Cole (14.0 points and 6.8 rebounds) and Randle Lacey (11.5 points and 5.0 rebounds) are both in double figures and will look to have big games and upset the Knights. Top ranked San Diego come into the game on a 9 game winning streak. Three Knights are averaging in double figures led by Wonder Smith who is averaging 17.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per contest this season. Smith has been solid all season and the sophomore standout is shooting 42% from downtown for the Knights. Robert McCoy has been solid for the Knights as the sophomore is averaging 16.4 points and 7.3 rebounds per contest. Ethan Esposito (10.0 points and 5.6 rebounds) and Robert Taylor (9.9 points and 5.4 rebounds) will look to contribute for the Knights in first round action.
In other tournament action, 6th ranked Cerritos (12-3) will face off against 11th ranked Grossmont (9-5) in a battle of ranked teams in first round action. The Falcons come into the matchup on a two game winning streak. Cerritos is led in scoring by sophomore Demetrius Thomas as the wing is averaging 16.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest this season. The sophomore has had eight double doubles this season for the Falcons. Keshawn Mack has played well for the Falcons as the sophomore is averaging 12.9 points and 3.6 rebounds and is the only other Falcon averaging in double figures. Jason Carter (9.6 points and 5.2 rebounds) will look to contribute for Cerritos in first round action. Grossmont comes into the game on a two game losing streak. The Griffins have struggled of late as they have lost three of their last four but against three ranked teams. Four sophomores are leading the way for Grossmont as the Griffins are led by Bryce Parsons as the guard has been solid all season and leads the team in scoring averaging 16.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season. David Wheeler (12.5 points and 3.4 rebounds) and Ronald Blain (12.5 points and 9.5 rebounds) are two other players that have been solid for the Griffins this season. Josh Moran is another standout and the sophomore is averaging 10.0 points, 4.1 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per contest this season. It will be a solid first round match up between two ranked teams in our weekly rankings.
In the last match up of first round action, Antelope Valley (9-8) will look to end their two game losing streak against tournament host Mira Costa. It has been a very inconsistent season for the Marauders as they come into the tournament looking to gain some momentum going into conference action. Three players are averaging in double figures this season for the Marauders as D’Mauria Jones leads the team in scoring averaging 22.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest this season. Jones has scored 20 or more points eight times this season and scored a season high of 39 points against El Camino. Osi Nwachukwu has been steady for the Marauders as the sophomore is averaging 13.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest for Antelope Valley. Greg Floyd Jr. (11.3 points and 4.4 rebounds), and Julian Payton (9.6 points) will look to contribute in todays first round action against Mira Costa. The Spartans come into the tournament losing four of their last five games and have not played since December 16th. Xavier Allison is leading the team in scoring as the freshman is averaging 13.5 points and 5.1 assists per contest this season. Sophomore guard Cody Hicks will look to contribute for the Spartans as the sharp shooter is shooting 41% from downtown and averaging 13.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. Cole Barton (8.4 points) and Andrew Thomton (7.9 points) will look to produce in today’s action against Antelope Valley.
